The head of an Emmy Noether junior research group at the University Hospital Bonn, funded by the German Research Foundation, is investigating the molecular basis of facial malformations. Clefts of the lip and palate are the most common. In most cases, genetic changes contribute to cleft occurrence, which together with environmental factors lead to deficient processes during embryonic development. In recent years, Dr. Ludwig has made significant contributions to the elucidation of the genetic causes of facial malformations and has generated one of the world's largest genetic data sets on this subject.
The award is accompanied by a lecture given by Dr. Ludwig at the virtual annual meeting of the Society on October 19 and 20, 2020.
