DFG Funding Atlas 2024: University of Bonn makes big leap into the top group DFG Funding Atlas 2024: University of Bonn makes big leap into the top group

Strongest upward movement among the top 40 universities

The University of Bonn has made a significant leap in the recently published “Funding Atlas 2024” of the German Research Foundation (DFG): The university improved from 15th place among all universities in 2021 to 6th place. The DFG Funding Atlas documents in detail and clearly the funding streams of public funding institutions to German universities and research institutions in the period 2020-2022.

Researchers at the University of Bonn acquired a total of 293.7 million euros from the German Research Foundation between 2020 and 2022. The University of Excellence thus increased its third-party funding income once again: in 2021 it was 208.5 million euros, 2014-2016 181.7 million euros. The increase, which according to the Funding Atlas is “the strongest upward trend among the top 40 universities”, is also due to its outstanding successes in the Excellence Strategy.

In terms of individual subject groups, the humanities and social sciences stand out in particular this year: with funding of 53.1 million euros, they rank 6th in the Germany-wide DFG comparison - an improvement of 9 places compared to 2021. The life sciences moved up two places to 10th place with 115.9 million euros. The natural sciences landed in 9th place with 62 million euros in funding. Although the engineering sciences are only represented in a few subject areas at the University of Bonn, the university makes it into the top 40 universities listed in the DFG Funding Atlas: 34th place with 11.2 million euros.

In addition to the overall ranking, the university is particularly successful in two competitions: with a total of 18 Leibniz Prize winners, the University of Bonn has the second most prizewinners in a national comparison since the prize was established in 1986. Only LMU Munich has more prizewinners. Bonn ranks third in Germany with 20 researchers funded by the European Research Council (ERC) in the period from 2021-2022 - and has thus already acquired more funding in this short period of time than in the entire period from 2014 to 2019. The authors of the study describe this development as “remarkable”. There are currently 53 grants (Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants, Synergy Grants and Proof of Concept) at the University of Bonn, more than ever before.

Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch is delighted: “Our outstanding academics and their cutting-edge research are the main guarantee for this great success. The results once again demonstrate the continuing dynamism and increased performance of the University of Bonn in all its breadth. An impressive confirmation of our Excellence Strategy and an enormous tailwind for the coming years.”

In 2018, the University of Bonn was the only German university to acquire six Clusters of Excellence and has also been funded as a University of Excellence with a double-digit million amount annually by the federal and state governments since 2019.
