Purposeful Networking in an Academic Context

A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

This workshop will help you to analyse your own goals and your network. It will provide techniques for strategically expanding and maintaining your network, including a look at social media and networks and the opportunities they offer. We will also take a closer look at communication, especially at small talk: What is small talk? How to do it? And: What might be the obstacles on the way to becoming a "good" small talker? Addtionally we will discuss how to use LinkedIn including posting (with AI).

Networking isn't about knowing as many people as possible and adding them on LinkedIn (if you already have an account). It's about developing insight into your own goals and motivations, and about the ability to find supporters to achieve them. And, of course, your willingness to share the knowledge and contacts you already have with others.

The workshop combines theoretical input with practical exercises. You will have space to interact with other participants, share your own experiences and apply the different techniques in numerous exercises.

Content

After the workshop, participants will

Have a deeper understanding of what a network is and how important aims are.
Have understood what different networks there are and how they can be organised.
Have analyzed their own networks.
Have experience in how to do smalltalk to connect to other people.
Have deeper insight in actively using social networks (LinkedIn).
