Individual Consultation on Doctoral Studies
The Bonn Graduate Center1 offers you one-to-one consultation on any overarching aspects of doctorates and doctoral studies. In our consultations, we can discuss things such as planning your doctorate and exploring your motivation, funding doctoral studies, the different kinds of doctorate (individual vs. structured), academic career planning and management and dealing with doubts. We can also provide some initial help with mental health issues. Regardless of where you currently are in your doctorate or whether you have not even started, please do not hesitate to contact us and book an appointment if you have any questions.
What we offer
- We arrange phone consultations and online sessions via Zoom to discuss your questions and concerns on a one-to-one basis.
- Consultations are available in German and English.
- The free service is designed for prospective and current doctoral students at any stage of their doctorate.
- So that we can tailor our advice as closely as possible to your needs, we ask that you send us your curriculum vitae after booking your appointment. We will keep it confidential and only use it to help us prepare for our consultation.
- Our consultations can cover topics such as the following (although these are merely suggestions):
- Should I do a doctorate?
- How do I go about finding a supervisor?
- How can I fund my doctoral studies?
- What kind of doctorate (individual or structured) is right for me?
- How can I plan my career in academia?
- What can I do if I have any doubts about my doctoral studies?
- What steps can I take to look after my mental health during my doctorate?

Mental Health during your doctorate
Doing a doctorate can be a challenging and demanding time that is affected by numerous factors. As well as general life events such as family problems or professional challenges, specific aspects of a doctorate—such as a poor work/life balance or conflicts with your supervisor—can cause stress and overwhelm. We provide a wide range of services to help you.
