Slavery Studies

Slavery Studies is a research-oriented master’s degree program designed for one year of study. The program offers a broad perspective on interdisciplinary research on slavery and slavery-like phenomena in different times and geographies.

The program is aimed at students with a focus on or interest in text-based scholarship, material culture studies and social sciences. It is designed to allow students to learn about slavery and slavery-like phenomena while developing an individual and specialized research profile. Introductory courses provide an overview of the history and variety of these phenomena as well as the methodological and theoretical basis to research them. Courses covering case studies do not only address certain examples in detail but also provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge from introductory courses to case studies of their interest.

Being part of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies/the Cluster of Excellence "Beyond Slavery and Freedom," our master’s students benefit from cutting-edge research on slavery and the newly developed concept of “strong asymmetrical dependency” conducted in an interdisciplinary and international environment.
