Preliminary Course "Academic English"
Term papers, exams, essays, reading notes, portfolios, learning journals, research articles, monographs, literary and historical source texts, text books, science blogs, newspaper articles and many more - working on and with texts is the core of humanities subjects. You will read, analyze and write texts in English, and not only in English studies.
Course description
The course offers an introduction to the world of academic writing in English. We explore questions such as: What does it mean to write "scientifically" and how does it work in English? What is involved in the academic writing process? How can I expand my vocabulary so that I can understand and write different types of scientific texts? Which writing techniques and strategies will help me in a university context? How do I organize a larger writing project such as a seminar paper? Why are conscious breaks and relaxation times so important when writing?
Short inputs from the lecturer alternate with individual, partner and group work.
We will speak, read and write together partly in English and partly in German.
The course consists of a mandatory two-hour online pre-meeting on Zoom and two compact workshop days in presence (each 10 am - 6 pm). The group size is up to about 15 participants.
