Doing a doctorate in Germany presents all doctoral students with various challenges in their everyday academic work, as well as opportunities and obligations at German universities. Additionally, the supervision process itself can be challenging. Therefore, it is important to reflect on the supervision process right from the beginning of the doctoral journey.

This workshop aims to reflect on central questions related to the supervision process by discussing examples and applicable tools.

Opportunities and obligations of doctoral students at German universities: Reflecting on supervision and central questions connected to the process right from the beginning of the doctoral journey.

Building a relationship with the supervisor: What do I need as a doctoral student to work efficiently on my dissertation? What can I expect as support from my supervisor? What is their role in the supervision process, and what is my role? What am I responsible for?

An individual coaching session can be scheduled on February 14, 2025.

Reflecting on the supervision and central questions connected with the supervision process right from the beginning of taking up a doctorate
Discussing examples and applicable tools
Potential "pitfalls" of communication and intercultural cooperation
Special aspects of academic supervision (e.g. expectations on good research practice, different working cultures, individual work "needs" – strengths and weaknesses, language competences)
