Traveling through Bonn and its Environs

Mobility in Bonn

Some 38,000 students, 6,500 university personnel and ca. 5,500 members of staff at the University Hospital Bonn commute (almost) daily to and from their place of work and study. Mobility is an important issue for a large number of people! The University of Bonn is integrated in an extensive regional transport network.

Bicycle Mobility in Bonn

The best way to get around Bonn is by bicycle. A growing network of bike paths and bicycle streets connects the various campus areas, which are spread throughout the city.

Season Tickets for Students

For students, their student ID also serves as a transportation pass for public transportation throughout Germany. This "Deutschlandsemesterticket" was secured by the General Students' Committee or AStA, which is also the source for further information about it.

Partnerships with goFlux and Cambio

The University of Bonn cooperates with goFlux, a company that supports the formation of carpools. Employees and students can use this service for free for six months. More information can be found here.

As part of its mobility concept, the University of Bonn also cooperates with the car-sharing provider Cambio. The service can be used both for official business and personal purposes. More information can be found on the service portal.

Green Travel with Erasmus +

The Erasmus+ program promotes "Green Travel," i.e., environmentally friendly travel. This involves using low-emission modes of transport for the majority of the trip, such as buses, trains, bicycles, or carpools (Erasmus+ Program Guide 2024). Environmentally friendly travel is supported with a higher travel cost allowance, and there is also the option to receive additional funding for extra travel days. More information on Green Travel within Erasmus+ can be found here.

The Prorectorate and the Sustainability Unit also provide additional financial support through the "Green Travel Award." The full announcement (including reports on the award recipients) for the "Green Travel" award in the Erasmus+ program on May 15, 2024, can be found here.

University Parking

As part of its agreement with the City authorities to extend its Poppelsdorf Campus, the University of Bonn moved to introduce comprehensive charges at all its car parking facilities as part of its overarching mobility concept, and its drive to  reduce the volume of motorized individual traffic on University grounds.

An underground parking garage for cars is located directly at the main university building beneath the Hofgarten. There are approximately 3,000 parking spaces available on university grounds. All parking spaces on the University of Bonn grounds are subject to parking management and are fee-based. Visitors to the university can purchase a parking ticket from ticket machines, while university members can purchase day passes or long-term passes. This system of pay and display is subject to close surveillance.

Working Together to Reduce Traffic

The University of Bonn has joined forces with a consortium of 200 employers including Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Post DHL Group and the University Hospital Bonn, in the “JOBWÄRTS” scheme, in an attempt to reduce traffic in the Greater Bonn Area, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. The scheme seeks to encourage the use of alternatives to single-person car transport.
