The professorship represents all aspects of “Special Trauma Surgery” and “Hand Surgery” within the field of orthopedics and trauma surgery in teaching, research, and the treatment of patients. The central task is the management of trauma surgery with plastic-reconstructive techniques and hand surgery within the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (director: Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dieter C. Wirtz) with treatment of all injuries to the musculoskeletal system, especially relating to the treatment of severely injured patients and polytrauma management.

The successful candidate will have a habilitation or equivalent academic achievements in the field of orthopedics and trauma surgery, as well as specialist certification in orthopedics and trauma surgery and an additional qualification in “Special Trauma Surgery.” An additional qualification in “Hand Surgery” is desirable. Ideally, the requirements regarding the licenses to conduct further training in these areas are fulfilled. In addition, all the prerequisites for managing a certified national trauma center (überregionales Traumazentrum, ÜTZ), authorization as an accident insurance consultant and serious injury specialist (SAV) for statutory accident insurance, and the management of a certified geriatric trauma center should be fulfilled.

Evidence is to be provided of research activities in the field of musculoskeletal trauma with successful acquisition of third-party funding. Active collaboration and integration in the hospital’s existing areas of research focus (especially osteoimmunology, musculoskeletal infections, bone defect regeneration) and the specializations and networks of the faculty and University are also expected.

In teaching, intensive involvement in designing and implementing student lessons is required. Integrative participation in establishing new classes and teaching concepts in the Faculty of Medicine is expected.

The successful candidate must have completed a university degree in medicine or natural science and a habilitation or have evidence of equivalent academic achievements. Experience in teaching in accordance with section 36 of the University Law NRW is preferable.
