Hindi
Hindi, together with English, is the official language of the Indian Union; moreover, Hindi is one of the most widely spoken native languages in the world. Thanks to its official status and its continual spread as a result of education, film music and television, Hindi has evolved beyond its area of origin into the most important lingua franca in particular among India’s less educated population, while English is the most important common language among the country’s elite. Since Hindi has the exact same grammar and basic vocabulary as Urdu, students who master Hindi also have a solid foundation on which to learn Urdu.
The main focus of the Hindi program is to convey passive mastery of the language to enable students to use relevant sources for research and application. After successful completion of the minor in Hindi, students are able to read texts in this language of intermediate difficulty with the aid of a dictionary.
