Your profile:

  • Experience in the area of linguistics and data science

for at least three years, who would like to conduct research on critical museum and heritage studies in an international team.

The Argelander Professorship in Critical Museum and Heritage Studies engages in transdisciplinary and transcultural heritage research, including the testing of decolonial methodologies. It seeks to plurify the formation of knowledge across museums and heritage.

The Global Heritage Lab is an international research hub for critical museum and global heritage studies and an innovative teaching and exhibition space. It fosters transcultural and transdisciplinary experimentation and provides impulses for rethinking museums and understanding cultural heritage against the background of global economic, ecological, cultural and political challenges. In particular, it engages with historically marginalised bodies of knowledge and forms of cultural expression. The Global Heritage Lab is supported by the Transdisciplinary Research Area Present Pasts, which is dedicated to researching the connections between current challenges and processes and negotiations of comparable phenomena in the past from transdisciplinary perspectives.

Postdoctoral Research Associate (100 %)

The position is part of the project “Accessibility and Sustainability for the tmLQCD Software Suite“ funded by the DFG and led by Bartosz Kostrzewa (University of Bonn) in collaboration with the working groups of Carsten Urbach (University of Bonn) and Stefan Krieg (Forschungszentrum Jülich). The project is embedded into the re-search program of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with the aim of contributing to the devel-opment and maintenance of the tmLQCD software suite and its high-performance kernel and solver libraries such as QUDA, DDalphaAMG and QPhiX as well as I/O libraries such as LEMON and lime.

Your tasks:

  • Adaptation and development of tmLQCD and its libraries to ensure continued cor-rectness and efficiency on the various supercomputing platforms in Europe and beyond
  • Extension of tmLQCD’s library interfaces to QUDA, QPhiX and DDalphaAMG to sup-port more fermion actions
  • Improvement of the handling of meta- and provenance data by tmLQCD and its I/O libraries as well as other improvements to reproducibility
  • Establishment of a continuous integration workflow for tmLQCD suitable for heter-ogeneous execution as well as general improvement of code coverage
  • Publication and presentation of the results of the project both at conferences on research software engineering and high performance computing (deRSE, SC, ISC, ...) as well as topical workshops and conferences and/or in journals.

Your profile:

  • PhD in physics, computer science, mathematics or a related subject
  • Interest and experience in high performance computing
  • Practical experience in collaborative software development
  • Strong background in C
  • Welcome assets: experience with lattice gauge theory, C++, GPUs and the develop-ment and usage of continuous integration workflows.

Data Analyst for Gene Regulation as an Academic Functional Specialist (salary group A13 LBesO)

who translates the biological questions of our work into mathematical solutions and develops innovative programming to enable precise data analysis with passion and technical know how.

In the role of Data Analyst, you are a central component of Prof. Nicolas Gompel's team, which investigates the genetic origin of evolutionary changes (www.gompel.org). A major focus of the group is to characterize the molecular changes that lead to new gene regulation and phenotypic evolution. The Gompel lab combines dissection of enhancers with reporter constructs in transgenic Drosophila with quantitative imaging and statistical modeling to understand the molecular basis of regulatory changes. You will study these changes at the level of closely related Drosophila species as well as populations and adapt classical Drosophila melanogaster genetics to these different species to test evolutionary hypotheses.

Your tasks:

  • Collaboration in several research projects in the field of gene regulation to support biologists in dealing with complex mathematical questions,
  • Development of software and data analysis pipelines and application of mathematical/physical approaches to study the relationship between phenotype and genotype, based on experimental data generated by the research group in the Department of Biology,
  • Interpretation of the generated data from a biological perspective together with the team,
  • Composition of research articles, 1-2 publications are planned in each project, in which the post holder will be involved as co-author,
  • Teaching (5 units per week), including lectures, course administration and supervision of a group of international and highly motivated students,
  • If interested, there is the possibility of acquiring own third-party funding and conducting independent research projects.

Your profile:

  • You have completed a Master's/Diploma degree in mathematics or physics or another natural science subject with an affinity for mathematical issues and a completed doctorate in a relevant subject,
  • You have worked full-time in a relevant field for at least 3.5 years after completing your studies or at least 1 year after completing your doctorate, ideally in the field of genetics or molecular biology,
  • You have the ability to work inter-disciplinarily and think conceptually,
  • You are a flexible, approachable and open-minded person who is at ease in an inter-disciplinary and intercultural environment
  • You have very good programming skills in Python, previous knowledge of the programs MATLAB, R and image analysis is desirable,
  • You have a very good command of written and spoken English and a good command of German (some teaching will be held in German).
