A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center

This workshop aims to introduce basic statistical knowledge, terms, and methods to analyze data for research. It is particularly suited for natural and life scientists but open to doctoral students from all disciplines. The workshop includes both theoretical and practical components.

Description

Day 1: Historical Outline and Theoretical Basics
• Historical Outline: Cognitive biases, causal and inductive reasoning
• Theoretical Basics: Observational vs. experimental studies, types of studies, key statistical concepts (P value, significance, confidence interval), debates on P value use
• Tips and Tricks: Excel for data encoding and analysis, radar graphs for multidimensional data

Day 2: Hands-On Sessions
• SPSS:
o Introduction to SPSS, Titanic data analysis
o Data import, labelling, conversion, and analysis

• Stata:
o Introduction to Stata, HDR 1999 Human Development Report data
o Correlation analysis, linear modelling using experimental data

Day 3: Advanced Hands-On Sessions and Theoretical Concepts
• Logistic Regression:
o Observational data analysis (coronary heart disease predictors)
o Final solution for Titanic data
o Binary modelling of birthweight and smoking data

• Panel Data and Theory:
o Impact analysis of hypothetical drugs on high blood pressure
o The "Spaghetti problem" and data simulation (bootstrap)
