My research focuses on three different areas: (1) uveal melanoma (UM), (2) ophthalmic pathology and (3) ocular development (based on an archive of more than 1000 fetal eyes). I started working on UM in 2010 with a project on the tumor microenvironment followed by the establishment of a modified mouse model of intraocular melanoma in which we have been able to show the influence of macrophages on the tumor pattern, including vasculogenic mimicry. More recently, I have shifted my research focus to epigenetics in UM, including the analysis of histone post-translational modifications in UM tissues and cell lines. As the available cell lines were not representative of the primary tumor, we have recently successfully established tumour spheroids (ALI-PDOs) from fresh UM tissue. In ophthalmic pathology, I focus on clinicopathological correlations to improve the clinical management of ocular diseases and the implementation of AI to aid clinical and histological diagnosis of selected lesions.
