Modelling for Life and Health 2025
The University of Bonn Transdisciplinary Research Areas (TRAs) “Modelling” and “Life and Health” aim to support highly innovative, transdisciplinary research projects addressing new and relevant questions at the interface between Mathematics or Computer Sciences and the research topics of “Life and Health” or aimed at the development of new tools, which push the borders of existing research questions in this area.
The innovative and cross-disciplinary nature of the proposal is the most important requirement for funding. A continuation of already established projects, or projects well within past research trajectories, will not be funded.
Submission deadline:
December 15, 2024
The successful proposal will receive a funding of up to 100.000 EUR.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the TRA manager.
Guidelines for application
Expected are joint applications from two project leaders, one from TRA Modelling and one from TRA Life and Health. University members of the TRAs Modelling and Life and Health are eligible to apply. We would like to especially encourage scientists who have not applied previously to a TRA call!
Funding can also be awarded to postdocs hosted within the groups of the university TRA members.
- Funds can be used flexibly within DFG funding regulations.
- Funds cannot be transferred to external institutions. In case of collaborative projects, the administration of funds will have to be carried out by the Bonn university partner.
- If funding of a PhD student is planned, please state how supervision will be organized and how funding after the initial TRA-funded period will be guaranteed.
- No investment costs for basic lab equipment or standard office PCs can be covered. In case of project-related acquisitions, maintenance and depreciation must be ensured by the applicants' institutions.
The proposal (including figures) should not exceed 8 pages including all material (DIN A4, font size 11 including figures and references). Please use our TRA application form.
The application should contain a summary (max. 200 words), as well as a short CV of the applicants incl. list of up to five publications relevant for this proposal.
The proposal should make clear the state of the art, explain how the proposal goes beyond it and provide a balanced description of feasibility and risky aspects of the project. The proposal should be concise, but still be understandable without additional resources.
We are committed to sharing algorithms, methods and data/code within the scientific community. The proposal should therefore also describe briefly how this will be achieved and how other researchers from Bonn and beyond will be able to profit from or access the expected results.
It should contain a brief account of how the prize money will be used. The funding should ideally be spent in 2025.
Please submit your application in one PDF file to life-and-health@uni-bonn.de until December 15, 2024.
Selection criteria will be:
- Innovativeness
- Transdisciplinary character
- Quality of the proposed project
- Qualification of the applicants for this project
- Potential to create impact for future collaborative research between the TRAs “Modelling” and “Life and Health”
Exclusion criteria are:
- Projects well within current research trajectories
- Projects not driven forward by members of the two disciplines
- Continuation of running projects
- Applicants who have been awarded in the previous round of this call (2023)
Application deadline is December 15, 2024.
The Steering Committees of TRA Life and Health and TRA Modelling (with potential support from further reviewers) will evaluate the proposals in a first round. Subsequently, short-listed projects will be invited for a presentation to the Steering committees for final decision. Committee members with conflict of interest will be excluded from decisions.
A final report will have to be submitted at the latest four months after the end of the project to the TRA management.
