Description
Communicating your research to a non-scientific audience is a big challenge. But it is worth the effort. Getting into the head of policy makers and other societal stakeholders is crucial when aiming at advancing society with your research contributions.
The good news is: Reaching out to the public and presenting results of publicly-financed research can become a joy instead of a duty. Nowadays, evidence-based policy is in high demand. The ability to boil down and explain research findings in a way that is accessible to a non-scientific audience is a critical skill – in the media, on public discussions and in political contexts. In an age of intense competition among different institutions for public attention (and funding), such a skill-set also benefits career advancement in academia.
ContentTEXT
This half-day workshop combines theoretical background information, professional advice and hands-on-exercises. One aim of the workshop is to work in small groups on producing a policy brief that presents one’s own research results.
This workshop is aimed at doctoral students who have already identified their field of research and produced some first policy-relevant results. Participants should bring their own printed research paper/article/preprint (preferably with policy-relevant content) and their own laptop, if possible.
