Artificial Intelligence Empowered Research: Exploring Benefits and Limitations of Using AI in the Research Process
A workshop offered by the Bonn Graduate Center
Artificial Intelligence (AI) will revolutionize the way we live and work. While for many, it may be challenging to understand that this revolution will accelerate exponentially, it may be a good start to explore how AI can already today support the research process. As young researchers you may need to manage your academic or other professional career, in a world, where most knowledge work can be done better, even much better by AI than by humans.

Description
Hence, it is helpful, perhaps necessary, to gain some knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of AI as well as acquire the ability to apply AI tools for research that matters, and to critically reflect the developments.
In this workshop, you will receive an introduction to AI, become aware of the opportunities of AI, experience several of the best tools for research, but also the risks this technology brings along. And you will have internalized that not using AI will mean – due to the exponential growth inherent in the technology – foregoing a chance to significantly improve your research. The skills can usefully be applied also for the guidance of master and bachelor students.
The workshop is directed at doctoral students who are interested in using AI for their research. The workshop will cover the basics of AI and participants will not be required to do coding, data processing, feature engineering, or model selection. In other words, the workshop is directed at researchers who want to start using popular AI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini and NOT for those who have already ample experience and wish to use technical AI tools such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
Content
- Overview of core concepts and technologies and the likely development over the next years
- Introduction to state-of-the art AI applications for researchers such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Poe
- Practical application of AI to support working on participants’ academic papers or book chapters
- Critical reflection of selected legal issues such as plagiarism or copyright regulations
- Discussion of advantages and boundaries of using AI in the research process including an outlook on the future
