The iStudy program for international students at bachelor’s and state examination level
iStudy helps students achieve success in their studies, improve their language skills and become integrated into Bonn society. It is intended for international students on bachelor’s and state examination degree programs.
About the program
The iStudy program offers tailored workshops and other activities that are specifically designed for international students to engage in before and during their studies. The students are given wide-ranging assistance to improve their language skills, develop strategies for learning and become integrated into Bonn society. International students thus get targeted support to formulate a strategy for their own personal study success.
One-to-one advice
During our one-to-one office hours, we help international students on bachelor’s and state examination degree programs to answer questions such as:
- What contact points and workshops can help me improve my own personal study success?
- What German course at the University of Bonn would suit me?
- How can I meet other students from my subject?
- What social activities are on offer in Bonn, both within and outside the University?
- What are my options for social engagement in Bonn?
- Who can I turn to for psychosocial counseling?
- Who are the right people to contact if I have specific questions about studying in Bonn and actually getting and settling in here?
Funding under the DAAD’s “FIT” grant program
With iStudy, the University of Bonn provides support services as part of “FIT – Promotion of international talents for integration into studies and the labour market,” a grant program offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the “Campus Initiative for International Talents,” the grant program supports university projects that focus on the entire “life cycle” (qualification pathway) of international students. This stretches from preparing for a degree program and getting into university through to support during their studies and ensuring study success, finishing up with their transition into the job market.
Planned activities
The offering is designed for international applicants on DSH preparatory courses, who can choose from a range of workshops accompanying their course. These workshops cover study guidance, living and studying in Germany and in Bonn, the teaching and learning culture and prospects for continuing study or embarking on a career.
They are run in partnership with the German as a Foreign Language section.
This compact training session is geared toward applicants who have signed up for the DSH examination at the University of Bonn. It readies them for the specific requirements of the examination just before they are about to sit it.

“Service Learning feat. international students” is a series of courses that provides a space for international students to actively shape their own future prospects. The courses can also help to show international students their options for a professional career and social engagement.
They are run in partnership with the Service Learning Coordination Office.
Run in partnership with locals, the host-family scheme is intended to make it easier for international students to become integrated in Bonn by arranging for individuals and families in the city to support them as points of contact and mentors.
Students invite their international peers to try out cultural, sporting and volunteering activities to encourage them to get to know the city of Bonn and its club culture.
