CWTS Ranking highlights the university's publishing performance, proportion of female authors and international collaboration

Following its recent successes, the ranking by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University (Netherlands) also confirms the scientific excellence of the University of Bonn and the international importance of its research.

The Leiden Ranking is published annually by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands. It is based on methodologically sophisticated bibliometric analyses that assess the scientific performance of universities using different indicators for the institution as a whole as well as at the subject level. Altogether 1225 universities worldwide were compared.

In the top percent proportion of most cited publications (1%), the University of Excellence Bonn achieved first place nationwide and an excellent 94th place in a worldwide comparison, improving by 45 places compared to the previous year. In mathematics and computer science, 16.7 percent of publications are among the 10 percent most cited in their field. This puts mathematics in Bonn in the top 10% of "high impact papers" in Germany at number 1 and worldwide at number 67. The humanities at the University of Bonn also increased their share in this area from 9.3 to 10.8 percent. This puts them in twelfth place nationwide.

The evaluation rubric "international collaborations" shows Bonn's strong networks with leading minds all over the world. In this category, the Leiden Ranking covers publications that were created with partners worldwide. The University of Bonn is ranked second overall in Germany and 136th worldwide. In Germany, the humanities even rank first for their share of publications in international collaborations. Physics ranks second nationwide in this regard.

In terms of the share of female authors in the total authorship of a publication, the University of Bonn ranks 30th nationwide. When comparing subjects, the rise in the humanities at the University of Bonn is particularly striking, with 31.4 percent of authors being female according to the Leiden Ranking.

The proportion of Open Access publications that allow free online access is comparatively high at the University of Bonn, averaging 63.9 percent. Here, Bonn comes in fourth place nationwide. Physics (79.1 percent) and mathematics (74.4 percent) achieve the highest percentage at the University of Bonn.

"Especially in the field of international collaborations, we are making great efforts to expand the exchange of knowledge across national borders and to intensify collaboration with our international partners. Having these efforts reflected in the current ranking is a great success."
