Born in 1960, Mark Chapman is a British priest, theologian and university lecturer who has been Vice-Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon, a Church of England theological college, since 2002 and Professor of the History of Modern Theology at the University of Oxford since 2015.
In particular, the Faculty of Protestant Theology is acknowledging “his fundamental historical work, which has significantly broadened our understanding of the history of Anglicanism in the 19th and 20th centuries and of German-British relations in the Church and theology and our knowledge of liberal theology,” in the words of Dean Richter. She added that Prof. Chapman had “played a key role in strengthening ecumenical ties between the Church of England and the Protestant Church in Germany in his role as co-chair of the Meissen Commission,” calling him “the most important driver and most reliable partner of the longstanding and extremely productive relationship that our faculty has enjoyed with the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford.” Together with Prof. Kinzig (Bonn), she said, he had spent many years bringing together young early-career researchers from both faculties and from all theological disciplines to discuss the findings from their research projects.
“I am most deeply honored to be receiving this accolade from the Faculty of Protestant Theology after so many years of fruitful and friendly collaboration,” Prof. Chapman said, commenting on his award. “At a time in which international cooperation sometimes seems to be in jeopardy, it is absolutely crucial for researchers to cultivate academic ties and personal friendships across borders in order to promote lasting peace and prosperity among the nations and Churches.”
