Robotics and agriculture in the focus of young researchers Robotics and agriculture in the focus of young researchers

"PhenoRob" Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bonn acquires funding for an international Summer School

Another milestone for the Cluster of Excellence “PhenoRob – Robotics and Phenotyping for Sustainable Crop Production” at the University of Bonn and the agricultural research community: Together with two of the leading universities of the world, ETH Zurich in Switzerland and Lincoln University in the UK, PhenoRob will host the International Summer School “Agricultural Robotics” at the University of Bonn from August 23-27, 2021. The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) provides 25,000 euros in funding for the Summer School.

Over the course of five days, 40 young researchers will have the chance to participate in scientific workshops, discussions, trainings and joint activities led by the Cluster’s researchers. "The Summer School will be a wonderful opportunity for our Master’s and PhD students to get valuable insights into the excellent research that is being done in PhenoRob”, says Nora Berning, Chief Administrative Officer of the Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob. The topics covered in the workshops include Machine Learning (Prof. Dr. Ribana Roscher, University of Bonn), Deep Learning for Applied Image Classification (Prof. Dr. Chris McCool, University of Bonn), Crop Phenotyping for Increased Sustainability (Prof. Dr. Achim Walter, ETH Zurich), Graph-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (Prof. Dr. Cyrill Stachniss, University of Bonn), Robot Perception (Prof. Dr. Hanheide & Prof. Dr. Grzegorz, University of Lincoln), Analysing Temporal Visual Data and Forecasting (Prof. Dr. Gall, University of Bonn) and Economics of Robotics and Sensing Applications in Agriculture (Prof. Dr. Börner, University of Bonn).

Building a strong network with other scientists is especially important for young researchers. With its broad cultural program accompanying the scientific workshops, the program of the PhenoRob Summer School lays the foundations for a broad international network that will last beyond next summer. As part of the networking events, the young researchers will be able to enjoy field visits to our partner, the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), and to the central field experiments of the Cluster at Campus Klein-Altendorf. A hike in the Siebengebirge followed by a cultural visit to one of the oldest taverns within this protected natural area are also planned.

The International Summer School “Agricultural Robotics” is part of the funding scheme “Summer Schools in Germany” of the DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service). The aim of this funding line is fourfold: First, the recruitment of excellent international students and young researchers. Secondly, scientific qualification as well as scientific and cultural exchange between participants from abroad and from within Germany. Thirdly, insights into the German research landscape and academic research culture. And, last but not least, the positioning of the German institution in the international Higher Education system.

The PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence

PhenoRob is one of six Clusters of Excellence at the University of Bonn and is carried out in cooperation with the Forschungszentrum Jülich. It is the only Cluster of Excellence in Germany on the topic of agriculture. The project started on January 1, 2019 and will run until the end of 2025, with the possibility to receive funding for another seven years. The Clusters of Excellence are part of the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments. PhenoRob is led by two spokespersons, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heiner Kuhlmann and Prof. Dr. Cyrill Stachniss. More information can be found on the official website: www.phenorob.de
