A major contribution of von Braun and his group to the success of the summit were concrete proposals for the measures adopted by the summit, summarized in the "Science Reader for the UNFSS" (https://www.un.org/en/food-systems-summit/the-science). UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed sent a personal message to Prof. von Braun thanking him for his involvement, saying, "Thank you for your impressive contribution to the entire process. You have provided a new perspective on science, especially at the country level."
The goal of the summit was to transform the food system to meet the combined challenges of food security, malnutrition, climate change, natural resource degradation and economic well-being. The Summit was convened in the context of the United Nations Decade of Action to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In line with the overall goals of the Decade of Action, the Summit aims to bring to the attention of countries and stakeholders from all parts of the world the benefits of a systems approach to food issues in the context of the overall 2030 Agenda and how these benefits can be maximized.
In addition to his professorship at the University of Bonn, Prof. von Braun is also Vice President of Welthungerhilfe and President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
