University of Bonn’s Mathematics department ranked 14th—ahead of prestigious universities like Harvard (16th). Bonn’s Economics department currently ranks 39th worldwide. The departments of Physics, Human Biology, Dentistry and Pharmacy of the University of Bonn rank between 51-75, Geography within the 101-150 range.
The University Rector, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch interprets the high rankings as confirmation of the University’s strategy: “The rankings document the advanced research capability of our departments, which is essential for the innovative modes of collaboration we pursue within the framework of Transdisciplinary Research Areas. These TRAs, as part of our Excellence Strategy, concern broader sectors of inquiry which are of major societal importance.”
The Shanghai Ranking (aka Academic Ranking of World Universities) applies five criteria to produce a ranking of 54 different departments at 1,800 universities around the globe. The criteria include publication data, such as academic publications in top journals, international co-publications, citation factors and the number of prizes and awards earned by the university.
