Could you describe your research topic to someone from another discipline in one sentence?
I study how a hormone linked to heart protection works, aiming to develop drugs that mimic its effects.
Why did you decide to do your doctorate in Bonn?
I chose Bonn because a professor here was working on a topic I’m really passionate about. I initially joined her lab during my master’s and decided to stay for my PhD.
Where is your favorite place to work on your dissertation? Where are you most effective?
Somewhere quiet—usually my apartment or a small library at our institute where I can focus best.
Do you have a tip on how to overcome the lack of motivation during difficult phases of the dissertation?
A few things help me: reminding myself why I started, breaking work into smaller daily or weekly goals, and keeping the big picture in mind by envisioning the next milestones.
What advice would you give new doctoral researchers at the University of Bonn?
Use the early stage of your thesis to read as much as you can about the field and set up a system to organize both the literature and your ideas.
Charles Addo Nyarko1, the doctoral student introduced in our fall 2024 issue, wanted to know: Do you have any tips on how to keep up with all the new information coming out each week in your area of research?
I set up weekly alerts on literature databases and either read the most relevant papers or summarize them using a language model for a quick overview.
We would like to thank you for the interview and wish you all the best and every success for the future!
