Transdisciplinary Research Areas (TRA)
The six transdisciplinary research areas (TRAs) of the University of Bonn offer various funding opportunities for their members (and members-to-be).
Individual Funding
Bonn International Fellows
Invitation of excellent researchers from all disciplines to Bonn for short stays (up to 12 days).
Bonn SDG Fellowships
Invitation of scholars preferably from the Africa, Latin America and South(east) Asia for research on Sustainable Development Goals-related topics (for periods of 3–12 months).
Argelander Scholarships for Doctoral Students from Universities in the Global South
Research stays in Bonn (3–12 months) for doctoral students at universities from the Africa, Latin America and South(east) Asia.
STEP — Support Program for Female Researchers
The University-wide Strengthen the Equal Opportunity Process (Stärkung des Equal Opportunity-Prozesses, STEP) program is dedicated to promoting female researchers at all career stages.
Distinguished Professors Emeriti
Recruitment of retired international academics for long-term appointments at the University of Bonn (usually for two years).
Ernst Robert-Curtius Visiting Professorship
Invitation of faculty from the Collège de France for guest lectures at the University of Bonn.
Return Grants for International Visiting Scholars
The goal of this measure is to strengthen international networks and to include former international visiting scholars in activities that support early-career researchers.
Argelander Starter-Kit Grant (A) Stepping Stone
Would you like to transfer to the University of Bonn for your next career step? The Starter Kit Grant (A) - Stepping Stone offers you up to two years of employment for the start of an academic career. The focus of the funding is the preparation of an application for third-party funding.
Argelander Starter-Kit Grant (B) Research Funds
With the Starter-Kit Grant we make you fit for the start of an academic career after your doctorate. The funding includes material resources to support research activities as well as a comprehensive advisory programme for writing a third-party funding proposal and preparing for an academic career.
Argelander Academy Grants
Argelander Academy Grants allow postdoctoral researchers to invite up to four international postdocs with similar research interests to come to Bonn for a period of two to eight weeks to work together on a research question. Each academy concludes with a small conference.
Argelander Mobility Grants
Argelander Mobility Grants support more experienced postdocs (one to five years after completing their doctorate) to gain relevant international experience. The funding finances a research stay for six to 12 months at a research institution abroad.
Academic Online Events
This funding line supports postdocs' participation in online scientific events to assist them in career development and networking.
Scholarships for Doctoral students for a Joint PhD with the University of St Andrews
The University of St Andrews and the University of Bonn publish annual calls for doctoral students in selected research fields.
CAPES Visiting Professorship Scheme, Brazil
Funding is available for an exceptional team of researchers (professor, postdoc, doctoral student) from Brazil for between 6 and 10 or 12 months.

Bonn Global Cooperation Fund
Funding for joint international research and teaching projects, preferably in preparation of international third-party funding proposals (up to €20,000).
Collaborative Research Grants with Emory University
Funding for joint research projects with faculty from Emory University (matching funds from both universities for a total of up to €26,000 per project).
Collaborative Research Grants with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Funding for joint research projects with faculty from Hebrew University of Jerusalem (matching funds from both universities for a total of up to €20,000 per project).
Bonn-Melbourne Research Excellence Fund
Funding for joint research projects with faculty from the University of Melbourne (matching funds from both universities for a total of up to €20,000 per project).
Collaborative Research Grants with University of St Andrews
Funding for joint research projects with faculty from the University of St Andrews (matching funds from both universities for a total of up to €23,000 per project).
DAAD Eastern European Partnership Program
Travel Grants and per diems for faculty, doctoral candidates and students in all fields of study for exchanges with the Universities of Wroclaw, Prague and Warsaw.
Bonn-Melbourne Joint PhD Program
Funding for up to six joint PhD projects across three Bonn-Melbourne pairs of Principal Investigators, plus additional seed funding for PIs to support collaborative activities.
Bonn-St Andrews Joint PhD Program
Funding for up to four joint PhD projects (supervisor-led competition).
Prototyping Grants
Funding of science-based and innovative start-up ideas in the preparation, validation and development of marketable products or services (max. 50,000 €).
