Advice and Support from Fellow Students (Student Councils, AStA)
A student council is made up of the students enrolled in a particular subject. Once a year, they elect their student council representatives and the Committee of the Student Council – either directly or indirectly via their representatives depending on the size of the council. This committee is generally referred to simply as the Student Council and represents the interests of the department’s students both within the University and to the outside world. The General Students’ Committee (AStA) is usually elected by the Student Parliament (SP) for a one-year term. It handles day-to-day business, actions the resolutions passed by the SP and represents the student body in dealings with the outside world.
Student councils
Members of student councils act as mediators between students and institute management but also often sit on committees that require student members (e.g. institutional curricular committees, examination boards). In addition, many student councils provide information for first-semester students, take part in campaigns during orientation weeks and support course planning from a student perspective.
General Students’ Committee (AStA)
The General Students’ Committee (AStA) is usually elected by the Student Parliament (SP) for a one-year term. It handles day-to-day business, actions the resolutions passed by the SP and represents the student body in dealings with the outside world. The AStA is also responsible for negotiations over the student transit pass as well as providing students with a range of support and other services in its various departments.
