Studying with a Family
Balancing studies with caring for a child or children is a daily challenge tackled by around five percent of students in Germany. Commuting between your lecture hall and your daycare center, between your desk and your changing table, is not always easy. Students with children can find support, information and advice from the following offices at the University of Bonn:
University of Bonn Office for Family Services
The Office for Family Services has set itself the mission of improving the balance between students’ academic life, career, studies and family. As well as giving advice on maternity and parental leave, family-related allowances and caring for family members, the office also helps students find childcare by:
- Making information available on various options and current services offering childcare in the Bonn area
- Providing support and contact details to help parents find individual childcare for children up to the age of 10
- Working together with daycare centers, parents’ initiatives and family education centers in and around Bonn
AStA advice center “Students With Children”
The General Students’ Committee (AStA) regularly offers advice and counseling sessions on studying with children (e.g. financial support, finding a daycare center place, organizing studies) for pregnant students and those who have already become parents. Consultation times are listed on the website.
“Students With Children” information brochure
The AStA and the Office for Family Services have prepared a joint brochure entitled “Studying with Children at the University of Bonn (PDF),” which can be downloaded from the Office for Family Services website.
A Family-Friendly University
In September 2021, the University of Bonn was officially awarded the “Family-Friendly University Audit” certificate, which permanently secured its status as family-friendly university. Starting in 2011, the University participated in the audit conducted by berufundfamilie Service GmbH three times, actively introducing structures that support the compatibility of family, studying and career.
