In the new Sustainability Rankings of ranking provider Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the University of Bonn has emerged as one of the world’s top 100 universities. Climbing 43 slots, the institution now ranks 95th worldwide, showing very good results in many of the ranking categories.

The University is top-10 in Germany, ranking 6th among the 50 ranked German universities. Higher education institutions are evaluated in the three categories of Social Impact, Environmental Impact and Governance, which are divided into eight subcategories.

Strikingly, while improving in the overall ranking the University also did better in nine of the eleven categories and subcategories in a global comparison. In the subcategory Health and Wellbeing Bonn ranks 15th worldwide and 2nd in Germany. In the Equality subcategory it ranks first among German institutions while coming in at a highly respectable 25th place internationally. The University is furthermore a top-ranking institution in the Governance category, placing 100th worldwide and 4th in Germany.

“The University’s improvement across a wide range of relevant indicators shows how our “whole institution approach” is paying off with strong international positioning,” commented Professor Annette Scheersoi, University of Bonn Vice Rector for Sustainability. “Our sustainability efforts, conducted on a broad front, have led to this very good ranking result. It represents a success for the University that spurs us on in our further commitment.”

This was the third year for the QS Sustainability Rankings, in which 1,744 institutions from 107 countries were evaluated. Fifty of the 556 European institutions ranked are German. Applying 53 quantitative and qualitative indicators, the ranking is conducted by assessing the engagement of and social and ecological impact achieved by universities as higher education and research institutions and as major employers facing sustainability challenges in their operations as complex organizations.
