What do you do if your chain suddenly slips, your saddle starts jiggling backward and forward or you get a flat tire? The University of Bonn has now set up three new bike repair posts for precisely these kinds of problem. The posts, which are also open to the public, let you carry out minor bike repairs quickly and easily.
Besides a bicycle pump, the “first aid kits” on the posts also come with a standard set of tools comprising wrenches, Allen keys, screwdrivers and pliers. “All the standard minor repairs can be done with these tools,” explains Ferdinand Frechen, Head of Section 4.3—Technical Services. “I’m particularly pleased that the posts were made in a workshop in the Eifel region for people with disabilities.” He was responsible for launching the project and applying to the sustainability funding pot for a grant for it.
“We were delighted to receive Mr. Frechen’s proposal,” says Prof. Dr. Annette Scheersoi, Vice Rector for Sustainability at the University of Bonn. The funding pot gives all University members the opportunity to turn sustainable project ideas like this one into a reality. “The bike posts give us another way in which we can promote cycling, which is a very important issue for us. We might see a few more people climbing on their bikes now if they can fix minor problems on the go without having to push them home first.”
There is one site outside the lecture hall center in Poppelsdorf, another in front of the Department of Law and another at the Chemistry Institute in Endenich.
