The sixth-ever Night Flea Market was held July 11, 2024 in the CAMPO cafeteria from 6 to 9 pm. Some 700 people attended to browse through the 70+ colorful stands offering a wide variety of items, ranging from clothing to games, decorations, plant cuttings and even a bicycle. The General Students’ Committee and the Green Office were also on hand, available at their stands to talk to visitors about sustainable initiatives at the University of Bon, and sustainability in general.
Coming after the Clothing Swap in May, the Night Flea Market presented another opportunity to demonstrate more ways of integrating sustainability into students’ everyday lives. In today’s age of ‘fast fashion’ and accelerating consumerism, the alternative to simply throwing away used clothing and other items is to give them a new lease on life by circulating them around to others who will keep them in use. The flea market was organized by the Studierendenwerk, the General Students’ Committee, the Ecology section of the General Students’ Committee and the Green Office.
The Green Office is a student-run sustainability office at the University of Bonn, and thus very interested in participating in events of this kind with student interaction as an opportunity to raise awareness about its projects and how to get involved. Currently the Green Office team is working on revamping the Sustainability Reader as a source of information on the projects, initiatives and actors that are driving sustainability forward at the University of Bonn. Further events are already planned for the winter semester of 2024.
