Argelander Grants is the name of the new funding program for talented junior scientists at the University of Bonn. It offers two strands of funding that aim to support postdocs at the beginning of their scientific career.
The Starter Kit Postdoc strand includes comprehensive career consultation as well as support in preparing third-party funding proposals. Furthermore, postdocs are able to apply for up to 25,000 Euros in project funds that can be used for materials, research trips and to fund student research assistants.
The second strand, International Conferences, supports junior researchers in actively taking part in conferences, workshops, and research trips. This is particularly important at the beginning of a scientific career. It allows postdocs to build an international network and benefit from exchanges with experienced researchers from around the world.
“A special feature of the Argelander Grant is that we seek out our most talented junior scientists. We offer them the opportunity to apply for their own financial funding, which enables them to gain further independence. Thanks to this, recipients are given the opportunity to make strategic decisions for their career development at an early stage," says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zimmer, Deputy Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Bonn.
Applications are now accepted
All postdocs employed by the University of Bonn can apply for the funding. Exception being members of the Faculty of Medicine, as with the “BONFOR Program” they already have access to a similar funding scheme. Funding is for a maximum of two years. The first round of applications closes on 30 September 2017.
