The position is part of the DFG project “Averroes as Physician: Intellectual and Social Contexts of Medicine in al-Andalus,” led by the W3 Alexander von Humboldt Professor for Islamic Studies (Prof. Dr. Judith Pfeiffer). Prof. Dr. Pfeiffer’s working group consists of twelve to fifteen people, including several international fellows, who each come to Bonn for a period of up to three years to conduct research on Islamic intellectual history in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The DFG project “Averroes as Physician”, devised by Dr. Raphaela Veit, is dedicated to the medical works of Averroes in Arabic, Hebrew and Latin, and their interaction with each other. The advertised position will deal in particular with Averroes’ Arabic-language works on medicine. Applications for a position between 50% and 75% will also be considered.

Your tasks
- Analysis of the Arabic manuscript tradition of Averroes’ Epistle on Theriac,
- Analysis of Averroes’ Urjūza commentary and his Epistle on Theriac with a focus on the question of mixtures and pharmacology, if necessary taking into account other representatives of Urjūza medical literature in the Maghreb from the 11th to the 14th/15th century,
- Historical contextualization of the examined works, especially in the light of scholarly assemblies (majālis al-mudhākara).

Your profile
- a university degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Islamic Studies, Arabic Studies, History of Medicine or another relevant subject,
- very good knowledge of written and spoken Arabic,
- good knowledge of written and spoken English,
- a good knowledge of Latin and/or Hebrew is an advantage,
- a good knowledge of written and spoken German is an advantage,
- reading knowledge of French is an advantage
- commitment, flexibility, team-orientation, and an interest in continuous education.
